Comments from Word
An editor who works in Microsoft Word can review a compiled .docx as usual. Import their file to bring the comments and tracked changes into your margin.
- Compile your manuscript to Word (.docx) and send it.
- When it comes back, choose Project > Import Reviewer Comments (Word)… (⇧⌘R). On iPad and iPhone, it's in the ⋯ or + menu ▸ Readers.
Every compiled .docx records the checkpoint it came from. Five Rooms finds each comment's passage in that checkpoint, then follows it into your current draft, even if you've revised it since.
- Comments become margin comments, with the reviewer's name.
- Tracked changes become suggestions. Accept or reject them one at a time, or use Accept All in the inspector. Five Rooms records a checkpoint before accepting them all.
- Passages you've since cut are reported, so you know which comments no longer apply.
- Comments that can't be placed go to a note in your Inbox.
Importing the same file again adds nothing new, so it's safe to import a file that has been updated.
Formatting changes, and comments on text the reviewer has rewritten beyond recognition, may not be placed exactly. Check the Inbox note after each import.
