Fields

Fields are what the Outliner's columns and the inspector's Metadata section show for each document: Status, Label, POV, word target and the rest. You can make fields of your own, edit the options of a list, and remove what you don't use. Choose Project ▸ Fields… on the Mac, Fields… in the ⋯ menu on iPad and iPhone, or Fields… in the Project menu on the web. Edit Fields… under Columns in the Outliner's Group and Sort menu, and at the foot of the inspector's Metadata section, opens it too.

Making a field

Under New Field, type a name, choose a type and choose Add Field:

  • Text: anything you type.
  • List: one of a set of options, such as + and − for a scene's polarity.
  • Checkbox: yes or no.
  • Date: a day, set from a calendar.
  • Number: a figure.

The new field appears at the end of the list, in the Outliner and in the inspector. Drag fields in the list to change their order (on the web, use the ↑ and ↓ beside each).

Sets of fields

Add Fields For adds several fields at once, for the questions a plot grid asks of every scene:

  • Scene questions: Polarity (+, −, − → +, + → −, ±), What changes and Turning point.
  • Scene shape: Hook, Build and Payoff.
  • Scene turns: Progressive complication, Crisis, Climax and Resolution.
  • Tracking: Done and Deadline.

Only fields the project doesn't already have are added. After that they're yours to rename or remove.

Editing a field

Choose a field to rename it or, for a list, to edit its options: rename one, give it one of your colours, drag to reorder, or add another. The order of Status's options is the workflow that Next Status and Previous Status follow.

Removing an option that documents use asks where those documents should go: to another option, or to no value.

Some fields are the app's own. Status and Label can be renamed and their options edited; the others keep their names. The Beat field's options are the beats of your beat sheet, edited on the beat board. A journal's four statuses number and date its posts, so they can be renamed but not removed, and the Section type's Part, Chapter and Scene stay as they are because compile sets headings by them.

Removing a field

Remove Field takes a field out of the Outliner, inspector, collections and lanes. Its values stay on the documents: Restore, under Removed, brings it back with them. Making a field with the same name and type also brings it back.

Elsewhere

Fields made on two devices before they sync are one field when they share a name, and options added on both are kept. Re-importing a Scrivener project keeps your changes to its labels, statuses and custom fields, and takes the changes made in Scrivener since the last import. An AI assistant can set your fields' values, if you let it set fields, but can't make or remove fields.
