Share a Checkpoint for Review

Send beta readers or an editor a fixed copy of your manuscript. They comment in their own copy of Five Rooms, and their comments appear in your margin.

Invite readers

  1. Make sure iCloud sync is on (see iCloud Sync).
  2. In Revise ▸ History, choose the checkpoint in the column, then choose Share for Review… at the top.
  3. Add a note for your readers if you like, and choose Continue.
  4. Choose Invite… and send the invitation.

Readers see only that checkpoint's manuscript text: not your live draft, notes, research or history. To add readers later, choose the review from the Reviews menu in History and Invite More People…. Stop Sharing ends the review.

What readers do

Readers need Five Rooms on a Mac, iPad or iPhone, signed in to iCloud with sync on. When they open the invitation, the manuscript appears under Shared with me in their Library.

They select a passage and choose Add Comment… (⇧⌘C). The text is read-only. Each reader sees only their own comments. Everything they need is on their device, so they can read offline. Share Reading Progress in the reader's toolbar lets you see how far they've read (see Beta Readers).

Where comments go

Each comment appears in your margin, attached to the passage it's about. When new comments arrive, Five Rooms tells you how many. It stays attached as you keep revising. Readers can't change your text.
