Retail Details

Stores and distributors ask for the same things about a book: a description, keywords, categories, prices. Enter them once, in Retail details…, and copy or export them from there.

To open it, choose Retail details… in the Publish room for the Ebook, Print interior or Audiobook. The details sync with the project.

What you enter

  • Title: subtitle, series and number in the series.
  • Description: the sales copy, up to 4,000 characters, with a blank line between paragraphs, and the Short description (350 characters) IngramSpark asks for.
  • Keywords: up to seven words or phrases readers might search for.
  • BISAC categories and Thema categories: up to three of each. BISAC codes such as FIC019000 (Fiction / Literary) are the North American standard, Thema the one stores elsewhere use. Type a code or choose a common one from the list; check codes against BISG's full list.
  • Readers: audience, age range and whether the book is sexually explicit.
  • Publication: publication date and imprint.
  • Prices: a price for each edition in each currency. US and Canadian prices exclude sales tax; the others include it.

ISBNs, the publisher and credits come from Publication details… (see Front Matter, Back Matter and Submissions).

Checks

The top of the sheet lists problems the stores would reject, such as a description that's too long or a BISAC code in the wrong form, and notes on things worth adding.

Export

  • ONIX 3.0…: the standard metadata file for distributors and stores that accept it. It lists each edition that has a valid ISBN.
  • Details for KDP (CSV)… and Details for IngramSpark (CSV)…: one row per edition, in the order each store's setup form asks. Neither store imports these files from authors; open the file beside the form and copy each field across.

The KDP file has no audiobook row. Editions without an ISBN still get a row, as the stores can assign one.
