Composition Mode
Composition mode fills the screen with nothing but your words: a slate page on a dark backdrop, with the day's ribbon at its edge.
Choose Compose at the foot of the Write room, or View > Composition Mode (⌥⌘F). The menu bar and Dock are hidden. Press Escape, or choose Leave, to return.
The bar at the bottom of the screen fades while you type. Move the pointer to bring it back.
| Control | Does |
|---|---|
| Text − + | Makes the text smaller or larger, from 90% to 160%. |
| Page | Sets the page's width: Narrow, Medium or Wide. |
| Backdrop | Darkens the screen around the page: Dim, Dark or Black. |
| More | Look switches between the page and the DOS screens; Typewriter Scrolling keeps the line you're typing on at the same height on the screen. |
The bar also shows today's words and how many are left to reach your session target, and the sprint if one is running.
DOS screens
Choose More ▸ Look and then MS-DOS, WordPerfect, Green or Amber to write on the text screen of a 1980s PC. On the Mac, move the pointer to show the menu line at the bottom of the screen:
| Item | Does |
|---|---|
| Typewriter | Keeps the line you're typing on at the same height on the screen. |
| Synopsis | Shows the scene's synopsis, dimmed, above the text. |
| ◄ Columns ► | Sets the line length, from 40 to 120 characters. |
| Screen | Switches between the four screens and the page. |
| Esc Exit | Returns to Write. |
The status line shows the title, the sprint, the session against its target and the words in the text.
On iPad, choose Compose at the foot of the Write room. Its DOS screens have the Screen menu and Esc Exit only. Press Escape on a hardware keyboard, or choose Leave (or Exit on a DOS screen), to return.
