Outliner and Word Targets
The Outliner shows the contents as a table, with a column for each field. Open the Plan room and choose Outliner.
Editing in place
Change a document's status, label, POV, synopsis, tags, word target or any field of your own right in its row. Double-click a title to rename it. Changes are saved as you make them and sync like any other edit.
Several documents at once
Select several rows (Shift-click or Command-click on the Mac), then Control-click them and choose a Status, Label, POV or Section type for all of them, Set Word Target… for each, or Include in Compile / Leave Out of Compile. On iPad and iPhone, touch and hold a row.
Sorting and grouping
Click a column heading to sort by it; click again to reverse. To go back to the contents' order, choose Contents Order from the Group and Sort menu.
The same menu groups rows by Status (in workflow order), Label or POV. Choose None to show the contents' structure again.
Choose which columns to show from Columns in the Group and Sort menu; Edit Fields… at the end of that list makes fields of your own (see Fields). On the Mac you can also drag columns to reorder them and Control-click a heading to hide one. iPad and iPhone start with fewer columns so the table fits.
Views
A view is a set of columns, with its grouping and sort, for one kind of pass through the book. Choose one from View at the top of the Outliner:
- All columns shows everything.
- Structure shows each scene's Beat, its Position in the book, POV and words.
- Progress shows Status, words, the word target and Done, if the project has it.
- Story shows POV, Setting and Duration.
Change the columns and the menu says the view is edited. Save Current Columns as View… keeps them, the grouping and the sort under a name of your own; Update, Rename and Delete act on a view of yours. Your views belong to the project, so they're on every device it's on; which one you're using is remembered on each device. Columns appear in the order of the fields (see Fields).
On iPhone, View above the outline chooses a view, and each row shows that view's first two columns under its title.
Position
The Position column shows where each scene starts, as a share of the manuscript's words: 48% is just short of halfway. A chapter starts where its first scene does. When a scene's beat has a usual place on the beat sheet, the column shows it too ("48% · near 50%"), and turns red when they're more than 15 points apart in a book of 5,000 words or more, as the beat board and Plan ▸ Continuity do. Sort by Position for reading order.
A scene without a beat reads No beat in the Beat column, so gaps in the structure stand out.
Word targets
Type a number in a document's Target column (or the inspector's Word target) to give it a target. A chapter folder's target counts everything inside it. A bar shows how far you've got, and turns green when you reach it.
While you write, the Scene drawer (⌘D) shows the target of the chapter you're in. The corkboard shows each card's progress, and Library ▸ All statistics ▸ By chapter marks each chapter's target.
The manuscript and session targets are in Library ▸ All statistics (see Statistics and Targets).
