Read Aloud
Hearing your text read aloud catches missing words, repeated words and clumsy rhythm that your eyes skip over.
Listening
Put the cursor where you want to start, then click the speaker under the page. On the Mac you can also choose Edit ▸ Read Aloud from Cursor (⌥⌘R). Reading carries on through the rest of the open text, and each sentence is highlighted as you hear it.
While it's reading, a bar under the page lets you:
- go back a sentence or skip ahead
- pause and continue (⌥⌘R on the Mac)
- change the speed, from the next sentence
- stop
Stopping leaves the cursor at the start of the sentence you were hearing, so the speaker picks up from there next time.
Making notes while you listen
Click the comment button in the bar. Reading pauses and Add Comment opens on the sentence you just heard. Add your note, then continue.
Typing in the editor stops reading.
Voice and pronunciation
Read Aloud uses the project's audiobook pronunciations, and its narration voice if that's a voice on this device. Otherwise it uses the best voice installed for the project's language. Better voices can be downloaded in System Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ Spoken Content on the Mac, or Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ Spoken Content on iPad and iPhone.
Markup isn't read: emphasis markers, footnotes and scene breaks are skipped. In a screenplay, each heading, character name and line of dialogue is read in turn.
