Glossary and Dictionary
The glossary is one list of the names and words your story uses: its characters, places, objects and motifs from Cast & Places, the words you add, and every word with a pronunciation. Open it in Plan ▸ Story ▸ Glossary.
Everything in the glossary is:
- Spelled right in the project. The spell checker stops underlining it.
- Offered when you type @. A name, place or thing in the glossary appears among the choices; choosing it adds it to Cast & Places.
- Said the way you want. Type a respelling in Say as, such as "ILL-suh", and audiobooks and Read Aloud use it.
Adding words
- Choose Add Word, or select a word in the text and choose Add to Glossary (on Mac, in the context menu or the Format menu; on iPad and iPhone, in the edit menu).
- At the top of the glossary, Not in the dictionary lists words from the manuscript the spell checker doesn't know, most used first. Choose Add, or use its menu to add a word as a name, place or thing, or to your own dictionary for every project. Ignore stops suggesting a word in this project.
Select a word to change its kind (word, name, place or thing), add other spellings, or write a note. Choosing a character or place opens it in Cast & Places.
The glossary is part of the project, so your other devices share it.
My dictionary
Words you use in every project, such as your own name or the jargon of your trade, belong in your own dictionary: Settings ▸ Author ▸ My dictionary on Mac, Settings ▸ My Dictionary on iPad and iPhone. It syncs to your other devices through iCloud.
Import… brings in a dictionary you built elsewhere: Word's custom dictionary (CUSTOM.DIC, or Custom Dictionary.dic on the Mac), LibreOffice's, the Mac's own LocalDictionary (in ~/Library/Spelling), or any text file with one word a line. Words already in your dictionary are left as they are. The dictionary holds 900 words; anything past that is reported, not added.
