Five Rooms on the Web
Put a project on the web to read and write it in a browser at create.fiverooms.app, beside your Mac, iPad and iPhone.
Your writing is encrypted on your device before it leaves, with keys the server never sees. Only the projects you put on the web go there; the rest stay on your devices and in iCloud.
Make your account in a browser first: in Settings > Web (on iPad and iPhone, Settings > Five Rooms on the Web), choose Create an Account in the Browser. It makes a passkey and shows your recovery key once. Keep the recovery key somewhere safe.
Then, in the same pane on each of your devices:
- Sign In with Passkey uses the passkey you made. It also unlocks your projects on this device.
- Pair with Another Device… shows a code and a QR code. On a device that's already signed in, enter the code under Approve a Device, or scan the QR code with an iPhone or iPad. In a browser, open the account page.
If this device is signed in but doesn't have your key yet, choose Unlock with Passkey, or wait: once another of your Apple devices has unlocked, iCloud Keychain brings the key across. Sign Out of This Device signs out here only.
Settings and signing out in a browser
At the top right of the Library and of every project, the gear opens Settings: Match System, Paper or Lamplight, contrast and Show formatting marks, kept in that browser. Your initial opens Your Profile: the browser you're using, whether it keeps your key, your storage, a summary of your passkeys and devices with a link to the account page, and Sign Out. Signing out removes your key and the browser's copies of your projects; if changes haven't reached the web yet, Five Rooms says so first.
Put a project on the web
Turn on the project's switch under Projects on the Web, or choose On the Web in the project's menu. Your other Apple devices sync it through the web too.
To take a project off the web, turn the switch off. The copy on the web is deleted. The project stays on your devices and in iCloud.
A project you start in a browser appears in your Library on the next Apple device that's signed in, and goes on to iCloud from there.
Share a project
A project on the web can be shared with co-writers and commenters, who write in it with you live: choose Share Project… under the project, or in its menu. See Write with Others.
Agents on the web
An AI assistant connected to Five Rooms on the web, such as Claude on your phone, can work on a project only if you turn on Agents on the web for it: under the project in Settings, or Agents on the Web in the project's menu. It can then read that project and add comments and suggestions to its margin, even when your devices are off. It can't change your text.
Turning it on gives the server that project's key, so the server can read the project while it's on; Five Rooms asks before it does. Your other projects stay end-to-end encrypted. Turning it off stops agents and deletes the server's copy of the key. The project then gets a new key the next time one of your devices opens it.
Choose Agent Activity… under the project to see what agents did there: each request, what it asked and what it was answered.
Storage
If your account has a storage limit, Storage on the Web shows how much of it you've used, and by what: projects, reader links and connected agents.
When the storage is full, the web takes no more changes. Nothing is lost: the changes stay on this device and in iCloud, and the project shows Storage on the web is full. Take a project off the web or withdraw reader links to free space, then choose Try Again. Five Rooms also tries again by itself every few minutes.
If the pane says the account is suspended, nothing goes to or comes from the web until it's resumed. Your projects stay on your devices and in iCloud, and you stay signed in.
Add a browser or another device
Under Approve a Device, enter the code the new device shows and choose Find, then Approve; on iPhone or iPad you can scan its QR code instead. This device checks the code before it sends anything, so approve only a request you started yourself.
Devices, passkeys and your recovery key
The pane lists the Devices signed in to your account. Sign out one you no longer use, and it stops syncing at once. It also lists your Passkeys, when your Recovery Key was made, and recent Activity.
Choose Replace Recovery Key… to make a new one. The old key stops working, and the new one is shown once.
Your pen names, your name and contact details, your dictionary and the agent switches go with your account, so they're the same in a browser as on your devices.
