Margin Comments and Suggestions
Comments
Select some text and choose Format > Add Comment… (⇧⌘M). On iPad and iPhone, use Add comment above the keyboard (⇧⌘C with a hardware keyboard).
A comment is attached to the passage, not to a position in the document. It stays with the passage however much the text around it changes. If you cut the passage, the comment is marked passage cut.
Comments are listed in the inspector. Use Show to find the passage, and Resolve when you've dealt with it. Resolved comments stay listed but are no longer highlighted. A comment on a synopsis sits under the synopsis instead.
Categories
A category is a kind of comment with a name and a colour of its own: Fact-check in red, Tidy prose in yellow. To make them, choose Format > Comment Categories…. On iPad and iPhone, choose Comment Categories… from the ⋯ or + menu. Comment categories… in Revise ▸ Comments opens the same list.
To put a comment in a category, choose Category on the comment, in the inspector or in Revise ▸ Comments. You can also choose one as you add a comment.
A comment in a category is underlined in the category's colour in the text, and shows the category's name beside it in the margin. Rename or recolour a category and every comment in it follows. Delete a category and its comments stay, in no category.
Categories belong to the project and sync with it. An AI assistant can file its comments under your categories, by name; it can't make or change a category.
Every comment in the book
Revise ▸ Comments lists the open comments and suggestions in the whole manuscript, in reading order. The column chooses whose to show, From everyone or one author: you, a reviewer, a co-writer, a check or an assistant. Under Category, choose one to show only its comments, or Uncategorised for the rest. Show opens the passage in Write. While the contents are filtered, Only filtered scenes keeps to them.
Who comments
| Highlight | From |
|---|---|
| Yellow | You, reviewers, co-writers, and comments imported from Scrivener or Word |
| Purple, with a sparkle | Five Rooms' checks and AI assistants: "Continuity check", "Style linter", "Print preflight", or the assistant's name |
Checks never add comments on their own: you choose Add to margin. Adding the same finding again doesn't duplicate it.
Suggestions
A suggestion proposes a change to the text: a tracked change from Word, an edit from an AI assistant, a co-writer's or commenter's Suggest Change…, or a Scrivener change that clashes with your own. Suggested text has a green underline. Your text doesn't change until you accept it.
In the inspector's Suggestions section, choose Accept or Reject for each one. To accept everything from one person, choose Accept All > From *name*. A checkpoint is recorded first.
